A charitable donation is a gift made in the form of cash or property to a non-profit organization, with nothing given in return that is used to help the organization accomplish its goals and objectives.

Donation pledges are donors’ promises to give a certain amount of money to an organization over a set amount of time. Donors can make pledges that are conditional, meaning payment will only be made once a condition is met, or unconditional, meaning there are no strings attached.

In-kind donations are non-monetary donations made to nonprofit organizations. These nontraditional donations include the transfer of any asset, usually goods or services, and can be contributed by individuals or other organizations and companies.

Endowment (Link)

An endowment is a donation of money or property to a nonprofit organization, which uses the resulting investment income for a specific purpose. An endowment can also refer to the total of a nonprofit institution’s investable assets, also known as its “principal” or “corpus,” which is meant to be used for operations or programs that are consistent with the wishes of the donor(s). Most endowments are designed to keep the principal amount intact while using the investment income for charitable efforts.

Bequest (Link)

A bequest is a financial term describing the act of giving assets such as stocks, bonds, jewelry, and cash, to individuals or organizations, through the provisions of a will or an estate plan. Bequests can be made to family members, friends, institutions, or charities. When real estate is left through a will, it is called a devise.

Estate Planning (Link)

Estate planning is a process involving the counsel of professional advisors who are familiar with your goals and concerns, your assets and how they are owned, and your family structure. It can involve the services of a variety of professionals, including your lawyer, accountant, financial planner, life insurance advisor, banker and broker.

Estate planning covers the transfer of property at death as well as a variety of other personal matters and may or may not involve tax planning. The core document most often associated with this process is your will.

Employee Charitable Givings (Link)

If you work for a company, organization or the federal government, chances are you've had the opportunity to participate in a workplace giving program.  Workplace giving is an easy and efficient way to make tax-deductible donations to the charities you care about, typically with donations taken directly out of your paycheck. (Donations via credit card, vacation time and other methods might also be available depending on your employer's program).

CorporateMatching Program (Link)

Corporate matching gifts are a type of philanthropy in which companies financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organizations.

When an employee makes a donation, they’ll request the matching gift from their employer, who then makes their own donation. Companies usually match donations at a 1:1 ratio, but some will match at a 2:1, 3:1, or even a 4:1 ratio.

Corporate Volunteer Programs (Link)

Employee volunteer programs are a form of corporate philanthropy initiatives where firms get their workers involved in community service projects. The company sponsors these programs so employees can commit company time to volunteer work. Employee volunteer programs’ benefits include more productivity, increased employee engagement, and a better retention rate.
